PETALING JAYA: Lee Chong Wei will take on youngster Shi Yuqi of China in the All-England men’s singles final on Sunday.
But the three-time All-England champion can expect a tough fight from the 21-year-old Shi Yuqi.
The 2016 French Open champion played superbly to outplay six-time All-England winner Lin Dan of China 24-22, 21-11 in the semi-finals at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham on Saturday.
The world No.10 suffered tame defeats twice to Chong Wei at the 2015 Canada Open and the 2016 Japan Open but this time, the aspiring player from China wants the world No. 1’s scalp badly.
“I had expected to play Lin Dan in the final but instead, I’ll play his younger teammate. I’ll not be overly worried but rather stay focused on my game,” said Chong Wei.
“It’s great that I can still make it to the final at this age. I promise to give my fans a good show,” added Chong Wei, who won the title in 2010, 2011 and 2014.
Malaysia will be also challenging for another title through Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying in the mixed doubles.
The duo, who are in their first All-England final, will take on China’s Lu Kai-Huang Yaqiong.
Said Liu Ying: “It’s historic for us to be in our first final. Our opponents are the favourites but we’ll give them a good fight.”
