After hovering within the top 10 list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants over the last few years, New York’s Eleven Madison Park finally slid into the top spot on April 5 to claim the lofty title of best dining destination on the planet.

This year’s winners were revealed at an awards ceremony at the historic Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne, Australia.

Now in its 15th year, The World’s 50 Best Restaurants welcomes six brand new entries and three re-entries to the 2017 ranking. Showcasing a broad cross-section of cultures and cuisines, it includes restaurants from 22 countries across five continents. France, Spain and the USA each count six restaurants on the list.

In claiming the No. 1 position on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, Eleven Madison Park earns the dual titles of The World’s Best Restaurant and The Best Restaurant in North America. After debuting on the list at No. 50 in 2010, the restaurant has risen through the ranks to No. 3 last year. The restaurant’s co-owners are Will Guidara and Swiss-born chef Daniel Humm.

The triple Michelin-starred restaurant serves modern European fare in a multi-course tasting menu. Standout dishes include roasted duck glazed with honey and lavender and celery root cooked in pig’s bladder.

Interestingly, the win comes ahead of a major renovation plan scheduled for the summer, when the restaurant will close for three months.

Last year’s winner, Italian chef Massimo Bottura, was announced as the recipient of the second spot for his restaurant Osteria Francescana.

Seven restaurants in Asia are included on the 2017 list, with Japan and Thailand each counting two entries. After claiming the No. 1 position for a third consecutive year at Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants awards ceremony in February, Gaggan in Bangkok rose 16 places to No. 7 to claim The Best Restaurant in Asia title.

Other big winners from the 15th edition of the awards include Cronut inventor Dominique Ansel, who took the title of world’s best pastry chef and Peruvian chef Virgilio Martinez, who took the Chefs’ Choice Award.

Organised by the UK-based Restaurant magazine, more than 1,000 food writers, critics, chefs, restaurateurs and “gastronomes” cast their votes for their favourite dining destinations this year. For the full list visit http://www.theworlds50best.com.
